The Extra Day

I started writing this blog in 2008; however,  back then it was my intention to write four or five times a month.  Back then I was still a few years away from retirement.  I knew some people who wrote things daily, but I simply did not see how it could be done.  Doing so it seemed would require a ton of self imposed pressure, a lot of discipline, and too much verbiage for anyone to read.  I figured retirement would mean rambling into sunset years preaching part time and it seemed to be working that way until God did a surprising thing.  He took away my preaching place and lifted not a call to ministry, but the urgency of preaching.

Still the blog writing seemed like a sidebar to ministry and not the ministry to which God was calling.  After a couple of years without a weekly preaching ministry, the writing ministry slipped up on me.  When 2017 came to an end and I had written 300 blog posts, I started seeing as possible what I had thought to be impossible back in the beginning.  Each year since then I have written over 300 posts and this year enables me to reach one for every day of the year.  I always figured that would be 365, but here we are in a leap year which requires one extra post to write!

One of the things I have learned again through this ministry of writing is that it really is about what God is doing in and through my life.  Without His inspiration and use of me, the page would be forever white.  It has surprised me beyond measure to see the way this writing ministry has reached a wider group of people than I ever did in my preaching ministry.  God is always full of surprises!  So, here is my one piece of advice for the new year.  When you sense God is calling you to something impossible, just set out to do it one day at a time.
